Developing ideas

“If you look the right way, you can see that the whole world is a garden.” These words come from the author of the book The Secret Garden, first published in 1911. At that time, only the very rich in Britain had gardens. Very soon after this, homes with gardens began to be built. This is what started the British love of gardening!Today, millions of Brits like to say that they have “green fingers”, with around half the population spending their free time gardening.

For many people in the UK, their garden is their own private world. Each spring, children plant sunflowers and wait to see which one is the tallest. Expert gardeners know just the right corner for roses, and others spend hours trying to grow perfect vegetables to enter into competitions. And while many Brits like nothing better than spending their Sunday cutting the grass, some are happy just to sit under the branches of the trees and enjoy the beauty of the world around them.

But in cities, limited space has led to people looking for new solutions. Those without outside space can rent small pieces of land on which to grow things. Today, there are over 4,000 people in London waiting for such pieces of land. One recent idea has been to turn rooftops and walls into private gardens. These gardens have helped make the cities greener and improve air quality.

As well as being good for the environment, gardening is also good for the soul. What other free-time activity allows you to be at one with nature and create more beautiful living things? And if you’re in any doubt about this, take a moment to reflect on this line from The Secret Garden: “Where you tend a rose... A thistle cannot grow.”

1】These words come from the author of the book The Secret Garden, first published in 1911.
These words come from the author of the book The Secret Garden.
【分层】of the book The Secret Garden 为介词短语作后置定语修饰 author;first published in 1911 为过去分词短语作后置定语,修饰 The Secret Garden,相当于 which was first published in 1911,表被动与完成。

2】Today, millions of Brits like to say that they have “green fingers”, with around half the population spending their free time gardening.
【主干】millions of Brits like to say that ...
【分层】that 引导宾语从句 they have “green fingers”;with around half the population spending their free time gardening 为 with 复合结构(with + 宾语 + 现在分词 spending 作宾补),表伴随状况,spending 的逻辑主语是 half the population, gardening 为 spend ... doing 结构中表示伴随动作的现在分词。

3】And while many Brits like nothing better than spending their Sunday cutting the grass, some are happy just to sit under the branches of the trees and enjoy the beauty of the world around them.
【主干】some are happy just to sit ... and enjoy the beauty.
【分层】while 引导让步状语从句,意为"尽管、虽然";like nothing better than doing 为"最喜欢做某事"结构,其中 spending their Sunday cutting the grass 为动名词短语作宾语,cutting the grass 为伴随状语;主句主语 some 与 are happy 构成系表结构,to sit ... and enjoy ...
【考点】while 让步状语从句;like nothing better than doing;并列不定式;介词短语后置定语。

4】Those without outside space can rent small pieces of land on which to grow things.
Those can rent small pieces of land.
【分层】without outside space 为介词短语作后置定语修饰 Those(那些人);on which to grow things 为"介词 on + 关系代词 which + 不定式"结构,相当于 on which they can grow things,作 land 的后置定语,表用途。

5】As well as being good for the environment, gardening is also good for the soul.
【主干】gardening is also good for the soul.
As well as being good for the environment 中,As well as 为介词,后接动名词 being good for the environment 作宾语,意为"除了……之外(还)";主句主语 gardening 为动名词,谓语 is good for 意为"对……
【考点】As well as + 动名词;动名词作主语(gardening);并列递进(also)。

课文中 living things 的 living 为现在分词作前置定语,意为"活的、有生命的";with around half the population spending their free time gardening 为 with + 宾语 + 现在分词(spending)的复合结构,作伴随状语;limited space has led to people looking for new solutions 中 looking 为现在分词作 lead to 的宾语,表"导致人们去……"。

first published in 1911(被出版);若扩展理解,the cities greener 中 greener 为形容词比较级作补语。

gardening is also good for the soul 中 gardening 为动名词作主语;being good for the environment 中 being 为动名词作介词 As well as 的宾语;spending their Sunday cutting the grass 中 spending / cutting 均为动名词。

small pieces of land on which to grow things,等于 on which they can grow things,用"介词 + 关系代词 + 不定式"简洁表达目的,作名词后置定语。

And while many Brits like nothing better than ..., some are happy ...,while 在此不表"当……

6. 并列句与转折(but / and)
But in cities, limited space ... And while ... some are happy 用 and 衔接另一幅闲适画面,体现"有人忙碌、有人静享"的并列。

7. 现在完成时(has led to / has been)
limited space has led to people looking for new solutions; One recent idea has been to turn rooftops ...。
