(Neither Pine nor Apple in Pineapple)
Have you ever asked yourself why people often have trouble learning English? I hadn’t, until one day my five-year-old son asked me whether there was ham in a hamburger. There isn’t. This made me realize that there’s no egg in eggplant either. Neither is there pine nor apple in pineapple. This got me thinking how English can be a crazy language to learn.
我从未想过这个问题,直到有一天,我五岁的儿子问我 hamburger(汉堡包)里是否有 ham(火腿)。 这让我意识到 eggplant(茄子)里也没有 egg(鸡蛋)。pineapple(菠萝)里既没有 pine(松树),也没有 apple(苹果)。
For example, in our free time we can sculpt a sculpture and paint a painting, but we take a photo. And when we are traveling we say that we are in the car or the taxi, but on the train or bus! While we’re doing all this traveling, we can get seasick at sea, airsick in the air and carsick in a car, but we don’t get homesick when we get back home. And speaking of home, why aren’t homework and housework the same thing?
例如,我们可以在闲暇时雕刻一座雕像(sculpt a sculpture)、画一幅画(paint a painting),但我们只能拍一张照片(take a photo)。 同样,我们会在海上晕船(seasick at sea)、在飞机上晕机(airsick in the air)、在车里晕车(carsick in a car),但回到家里我们却不会“晕家”(homesick,实际意为“想家的,思乡的”)。说到家,为什么 homework(家庭作业)和 housework(家务)这两个看起来很像的单词,意思却不是一回事呢?
第3段
If “hard” is the opposite of “soft”, why are “hardly” and “softly” not an opposing pair? If harmless actions are the opposite of harmful actions, why are shameless and shameful behaviors the same?
如果说 hard(硬)是 soft(软)的反义词,为什么 hardly(几乎不)和 softly(柔和地,轻柔地)却不是一对反义词呢?
When we look out of the window and see rain or snow, we can say “it’s raining” or “it’s snowing”. But when we see sunshine, we can’t say “it’s sunshining”.
Even the smallest of words can be confusing. When you see the capitalized “WHO” in a medical report, do you read it as the “who” in “Who’s that?” What about “IT” and “US”?
中的 who 吗?
You also have to wonder at the unique madness of a language in which a house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out, and in which an alarm is only heard once it goes off!
English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of the human race. That is why when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible. And that is why when I wind up my watch, it starts, but when I wind up this passage, it ends.
这也是当我 wind up my watch(给手表上紧发条)以后表针开始走,而我 wind up this passage(将本文收尾)后这篇文章结束的原因。
trouble n. why people often have trouble learning English(学英语常有困难)
This made me realize that there’s no egg in eggplant either.
we can sculpt a sculpture(雕刻一座雕像)
paint v.:画;绘画。we can paint a painting(画一幅画)
get seasick at sea, airsick in the air and carsick in a car
we don’t get homesick when we get back home
opposite n. If “hard” is the opposite of “soft”
harmless adj.:无害的。harmless actions are the opposite of harmful actions
why are shameless and shameful behaviors the same
Even the smallest of words can be confusing.
capitalized adj.:大写的。When you see the capitalized “WHO” in a medical report
the unique madness of a language
when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible
it reflects the creativity of the human race
English ... reflects the creativity of the human race
out(多义):课文中 stars are out 指“星星出现/出来”,lights are out 却指“灯熄灭”,同一个 out 既可表“出现”也可表“消失”,极具迷惑性。
burn up / burn down:up 本义“向上”、down 本义“向下”,但在 burn up(烧起来/烧光)与 burn down(烧成灰/烧毁)中并不表示真实方向,而是约定俗成的搭配。
wind up(多义):常见义“给(钟表)上发条”,课文末句 wind up this passage 引申为“结束、收尾”文章,一语双关。
go off(多义):可作“离开”,也可指闹钟“响起”;课文 an alarm is only heard once it goes off 取“(闹钟)走完、响起”之意。

ask oneself why...
in one’s free time 在某人闲暇时

1】Have you ever asked yourself why people often have trouble learning English? I hadn’t, until one day my five-year-old son asked me whether there was ham in a hamburger.
Have you asked yourself...? I hadn’t (asked myself), until...
【分层】首句 why 引导宾语从句,作 asked 的宾语;第二句 until 引导时间状语从句,其中嵌套 whether 引导的宾语从句(whether there was ham in a hamburger);I hadn’t 为省略式,承前省略 asked myself。
2】You also have to wonder at the unique madness of a language in which a house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out, and in which an alarm is only heard once it goes off!
You have to wonder at the madness of a language.
【分层】of a language 为后置定语;其后接三个并列的 “in which” 介词+关系代词定语从句,分别修饰 language;第三个从句中 once 引导时间状语从句(once it goes off)。
3】English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of the human race. That is why when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible.
English was invented ... and it reflects .... That is why ...
【分层】前句为一般过去时被动语态(was invented by);后句 That is why 后接表语从句,表语从句中又含两个 when 引导的时间状语从句(when the stars are out / when the lights are out)由 but 连接形成对比。
4】When you see the capitalized “WHO” in a medical report, do you read it as the “who” in “Who’s that?”
【主干】do you read it as the “who”?
(When you see ...);in a medical report 为地点状语;as the “who” 中 as 表“当作、作为”;in “Who’s that?”
里的 who 吗?
5】Neither is there pine nor apple in pineapple. This got me thinking how English can be a crazy language to learn.
Neither is there pine nor apple (in pineapple). This got me thinking...
引起的部分倒装(系动词 is 提至 there 前);次句 get sb. doing 结构,how 引导宾语从句(how English can be a crazy language)。
部分倒装;get sb. doing 使役结构;how 宾语从句。
1. neither...nor...
Neither is there pine nor apple in pineapple.
2. 宾语从句(why / how / whether)
ask yourself why...;realize that...;thinking how English can be...;asked me whether there was ham...。
3. 并列与转折(but / and)
we can sculpt... but we take a photo;stars are visible, but lights are invisible。
4. 定语从句(in which 引导)
a language in which a house can burn up... 三个并列 in which 从句修饰 language,属“介词+关系代词”定语从句,which 不可换用 that。
5. 时间 / 条件状语从句(when / until / once / if)
when we see sunshine;until one day...;once it goes off;If “hard” is the opposite of “soft”。
English was invented by people, not computers.
This got me thinking...
the opposite of;an opposing pair;visible vs invisible;burn up vs burn down。
↓
铺陈现象(第2段):动词搭配矛盾(sculpt/paint 自带宾语,photo 却用 take);介词矛盾(in the car / on the train);-sick 家族与 homesick 反差;homework≠housework
↓
构词不对称(第3—4段):hard/hardly 与 soft/softly 不构成反义对;harmless/shameful 近义而非反义;rain/snow 可“-ing”而 sunshine 不可
↓
↓
独有疯狂(第6段):burn up/down、fill in/out、go off 等“反义/同向”混用
↓
