Reading and Thinking

We use both words and body language to express our thoughts and opinions in our interactions with other people. We can learn a lot about what people are thinking by watching their body language. Words are important, but the way people stand, hold their arms, and move their bodies can also give us information about their feelings and attitudes.

Just like spoken language, body language varies from culture to culture. The gesture for "OK", for example, has different meanings in different cultures. In Japan, someone might use it to mean money. In France, it can mean "zero" or "nothing". And in some Middle Eastern countries, it is very offensive!

Even the gesture we use for "yes" and "no" can be confusing. In many countries, nodding the head means "yes" and shaking the head means "no". However, in parts of Greece and Turkey, this is not true! There, nodding can mean "no" and shaking the head can mean "yes", which often puzzles foreign visitors.

So, the next time you are in a foreign country, watch carefully and try not to misuse body language. What is friendly in one place may be rude in another. The golden rule is: when in doubt, keep your hands still and your smile gentle — and remember that real understanding needs both eyes and an open mind.

1】We can learn a lot about what people are thinking by watching their body language.
We can learn a lot.
【分层】about what people are thinking 中 what 引导宾语从句作 about 的宾语;by watching their body language 为介词短语作方式状语。

2】Words are important, but the way people stand, hold their arms, and move their bodies can also give us information about their feelings and attitudes.
Words are important, but the way ... can give us information.
【分层】but 连接并列句;people stand, hold ... and move ... 为省略 that 的定语从句修饰 the way;about their feelings and attitudes 为介词短语作 information 的后置定语。
【考点】but 并列句;the way 后省略 that 的定语从句;并列谓语。

3】There, nodding can mean "no" and shaking the head can mean "yes", which often puzzles foreign visitors.
【主干】nodding can mean "no" and shaking the head can mean "yes".
