Reading and Thinking

(Narrator):Two rich brothers, Roderick and Oliver, have made a bet. Oliver believes that with a million-pound bank note a man could live a month in London. His brother Roderick doubts it. They see a poor young man walking outside their house. It is Henry Adams.

(Roderick):Young man, would you step inside a moment, please?

(Henry):Who? Me, sir?

Yes, you.

(Servant):(opening a door) Good morning, sir. Would you please come in?

How do you do, Mr ... er ...?

Adams. Henry Adams.

(Oliver):Come and sit down, Mr Adams.

You’re an American?

That’s right, from San Francisco.

May we ask what you’re doing in this country and what your plans are?

Well, I can’t say that I have any plans. As a matter of fact, I landed in Britain by accident.

How is that possible?

Well, I had my own boat. About a month ago, I was sailing, and towards night I found myself carried out to sea by a strong wind. The next morning I was spotted by a ship.

And it was the ship that brought you to England.

Yes. I went to the American consulate to seek help, but ... Anyway, I didn’t dare to try again. (The brothers smile at each other.)

Well, you mustn’t worry about that. It’s an advantage.

I’m afraid I don’t quite follow you, sir.

Tell us, what sort of work did you do in America?

I worked for a mining company. Could you offer me work here?

Patience. If you don’t mind, may I ask you how much money you have?

Well, to be honest, I have none.

奥利弗:(happily) What luck! Brother, what luck!

Well, it may seem lucky to you but not to me! If this is your idea of some kind of joke, I don’t think it’s very funny. Now if you’ll excuse me, I ought to be on my way.

Please don’t go. You mustn’t think we don’t care about you. Oliver, give him the letter.

Yes, I was about to go get the letter. Wait! (getting it from a desk and giving it to Henry) The letter.

亨利:(taking it carefully) For me?

For you. (Henry starts to open it) Oh, no, you’d better not open it. You can’t open it until two o’clock.

Oh, this is silly.

Not silly. There’s money in it.

Oh, no. I don’t want your charity. I just want a job that earns an honest income.

We know you’re hard-working. That’s why we’ve given you the letter. (to the servant) Show Mr Adams out.

Good luck, Mr Adams.

Well, why don’t you explain what this is all about?

You’ll soon know. In exactly an hour and a half.

This way, sir.

Not until 2 o’clock. Promise?

1】Oliver believes that with a million-pound bank note a man could live a month in London.
Oliver believes that ...
【分层】that 引导宾语从句;with a million-pound bank note 为介词短语作条件 / 方式状语;a man could live a month in London 为从句主干,in London 为地点状语。

2】... towards night I found myself carried out to sea by a strong wind.
I found myself carried out to sea ...
【分层】find + 宾语 myself + 过去分词 carried 作宾补,表"发现某人处于某种被动状态";out to sea 与 by a strong wind 分别为方向、动作执行者状语。

3】And it was the ship that brought you to England.
【主干】it was the ship that brought you ...(强调句)
【分层】It was ... that ... The ship brought you to England.
【考点】It is / was ... that ...

4】You mustn’t think we don’t care about you.
You mustn’t think (that) we don’t care about you.

5】(Henry starts to open it) Oh, no, you’d better not open it. You can’t open it until two o’clock.
【主干】you’d better not open it. You can’t open it until two o’clock.
【分层】you'd better (not) do 为固定结构,意为"你最好(别)……";not ... until 表"直到……才",until two o'clock 为时间状语。
【考点】had better 后接动词原形(否定加 not);not ... until 结构。

It is / was ... that ...
And it was the ship that brought you to England. 判断强调句:去掉 It was ... that ...

2. find +
I found myself carried out to sea.

You mustn't think we don't care about you. I don't think it's funny 同构。

4. had better (not) do
you'd better not open it. had better 后接动词原形,否定直接加 not,无时态变化。

5. be about to do(过去式 was about to)
I was about to go get the letter.

May we ask ...? / Would you please ...? / If you don't mind ... (The brothers smile at each other) 舞台提示(stage directions)在剧本中的功能。
