Unit Eleven Lesson 3 War Memories: Story C (A Piece of My Heart)/战争回忆·故事C(心之彼方)
I got a phone call from the chief nurse, saying, “You’ve got a patient there who is going to get an award. Make sure that the ward looks good.” This really turned me off to begin with, “Let’s clean up the ward because we’ve got VIPs coming in.” Well, the VIPs happened to be a general and a group of about a dozen people. It was this patient’s second visit to us and this time he’d had both his legs blown off—he was all-of-about 20 years old. When he was waking up after the surgeon had finished, he whispered, “Don’t you remember me, ma’am?” I said, “Oh yeah!” But really I didn’t because there were so many of them. The general was coming to give him the award because he happened to be number 20,000 to come through this hospital. They had this little ceremony, where they presented him with a Purple Heart and a watch. As the general handed him the watch, “from the army, to show our appreciation,” the kid more or less threw the watch back at him. He said something like, “I can’t accept this, sir; it’s not going to help me walk.” After this little incident, I went over and took him in my arms. If I remember correctly, I started sobbing and I think he was crying, too. I really admired him for that. That was the only time I let somebody see what I felt. It took a lot for him to do that, and it sort of said what this war was all about to me.
(Adapted from A Piece of My Heart by Keith Walker)
教材录入说明:all-of-about 20 years old 为教材口语化拼写,意为「也就二十岁上下」;he'd had both his legs blown off 为 have + 宾语 + 过去分词表「遭遇不幸」,并非「让别人炸掉」。
chief nurse n. the nurse in charge I got a phone call from the chief nurse。
patient n. a person receiving medical treatment You've got a patient there who is going to get an award。
award n. a prize or medal given formally 奖、勋章;课文 get an award / give him the award。
ward n. a room with beds in a hospital Make sure that the ward looks good。
VIP n. a very important person 贵宾、要人;课文 we've got VIPs coming in。
general n. a high-ranking army officer 将军;课文 the VIPs happened to be a general。
surgeon n. a doctor who operates 外科医生;课文 after the surgeon had finished。
whisper v. to speak very quietly 低声说;课文原句:he whispered, 'Don't you remember me, ma'am?'
ceremony n. a formal public event They had this little ceremony。
present v. to give something formally 颁发、授予;课文 they presented him with a Purple Heart and a watch(present sb with sth)。
appreciation n. the feeling of being thankful 感激、谢意;课文 from the army, to show our appreciation。
incident n. a small event, often unpleasant 小插曲、小事;课文 After this little incident。
sob v. to cry noisily I started sobbing and I think he was crying, too。
admire v. to respect somebody for what they did 佩服、敬佩;课文 I really admired him for that。
Purple Heart n. a US medal given to wounded soldiers 紫心勋章;课文原句:presented him with a Purple Heart and a watch.
Make sure that the ward looks good;同词根 ward off a blow 挡开一击,两义靠词性判断。
This really turned me off to begin with——护士反感的不是打扫,而是「因为贵宾要来才打扫」。
to begin with 与 at first 可替换。
the VIPs happened to be a general and a group of about a dozen people;同段 he happened to be number 20,000 两处都是「恰好」,后者正是全篇荒诞感的来源。
It was this patient's second visit to us
he'd had both his legs blown off 用 have + 宾语 + 过去分词 写「遭遇不幸」,且是过去完成时 had had。
presented him with a Purple Heart and a watch;注意与 the general handed him the watch(hand sb sth)两种双宾结构。
the kid more or less threw the watch back at him 几乎是把表扔了回去;与 something like、sort of 同属口语里的模糊限制语,让回忆听起来像真的。
He said something like, 'I can't accept this, sir ...'
it sort of said what this war was all about to me——结尾不把结论说死,正是这种迟疑让句子有分量。
take sb in one's arms:把某人搂进怀里。I went over and took him in my arms;一个动作替代了所有安慰的话。
be all about:「…… what this war was all about to me 这场战争对我究竟意味着什么;what 引导宾语从句并在从句中作 about 的宾语。
It took a lot for him to do that:字面「他那么做花了很大代价」,实指「那需要很大的勇气」。It takes + n. + for sb + to do

I got a phone call from the chief nurse, saying, "You've got a patient there who is going to get an award. Make sure that the ward looks good."
I got a phone call from the chief nurse.
【分层】saying, ... 是现在分词短语作伴随状语,用来引出电话内容(相当于 which said);引语里 a patient there who is going to get an award 含 who 引导的定语从句;Make sure that the ward looks good 是祈使句 + that 宾语从句。
The general was coming to give him the award because he happened to be number 20,000 to come through this hospital.
The general was coming to give him the award because he was number 20,000.
【分层】was coming 为过去进行时表按安排的将来;to give him the award 不定式作目的状语;because 引导原因状语从句;happened to be 表「碰巧」;to come through this hospital 是不定式作 number 20,000 的后置定语(序数词 / 序数编号后常用不定式,如 the first to arrive)。
It took a lot for him to do that, and it sort of said what this war was all about to me.
It took a lot for him to do that, and it said something about the war.
It took a lot for him to do that 为形式主语 it + for sb + to do 不定式复合结构(真正主语是 for him to do that),字面「那花了他很多」,实指「需要很大勇气」;and 后 what this war was all about 是 what 引导的宾语从句,what 在从句中作 about 的宾语,作 said 的宾语;to me 视角状语;sort of 为模糊限制语,故意把结论说得不那么满。
It takes + n. + for sb to do + what 宾语从句。回忆录最忌把主题喊出来;用 sort of + what ... was all about,结论留在读者那边。
Make sure that the ward looks good;I think he was crying, too;it sort of said what this war was all about to me(what 引导,在从句中作 about 的宾语)。
He said something like, 'I can't accept this, sir ...';I said, 'Oh yeah!' But really I didn't ...(didn't 后省略 remember him)。
3. 定语从句:a patient there who is going to get an award;the only time (that) I let somebody see what I felt(the only + 时间名词后的定语从句常省关系词)。
1. who 引导:a patient there who is going to get an award。
2. 序数编号 + 不定式:number 20,000 to come through this hospital;同类 the first to arrive / the last to leave。
3. 省略关系词:the only time I let somebody see what I felt。
1. 过去完成时:he'd had both his legs blown off(had had,双重 had)/ after the surgeon had finished / it had not prevented him from ...(跨课对照)。
2. have + 宾语 + 过去分词表遭遇:have both his legs blown off(不是「让别人炸掉」,是「双腿被炸没了」)。
The general was coming to give him the award;we've got VIPs coming in(现在分词作宾补)。
2. 不定式:to give him the award(目的)/ to come through ...(定语)/ to show our appreciation(目的)/ for him to do that(形式主语的真正主语)。
3. 双宾与介词结构:present him with a Purple Heart and a watch / handed him the watch / threw the watch back at him。
It took a lot for him to do that;对比附栏 it is impossible to see a black hole(跨课)。
5. 模糊限制语:more or less / something like / sort of / If I remember correctly——口语回忆的真实感全靠它们。
This really turned me off——反感的不是打扫,而是「因为贵宾要来才打扫」。
可迁移的是 saying 分词引出电话内容、have + 宾语 + 过去分词写遭遇、序数词 + 不定式写荒诞理由、more or less / something like / sort of 保留口语的迟疑,以及 It took ... / what ... was all about 这种不把结论说死的收尾。
I got a phone call from ..., saying, "... . Make sure that ... ." This really turned me off to begin with. The ... happened to be ... . It was ...'s second visit to us and this time ... had had ... . When ... , he/she whispered, "...?" The ... was coming to ... because ... happened to be number ... to ... . They had this little ceremony, where ... . After this little incident, I ... . That was the only time I let somebody see what I felt. It took a lot for him/her to do that, and it sort of said what ... was all about to me.
示范:I got a phone call from the office, saying, "You've got a student there who is going to get a prize. Make sure that the classroom looks good." This really turned me off to begin with. The guests happened to be a director and a group of about a dozen people. It was the boy's second visit to us and this time he'd had his left arm broken. When he was waking up after the doctor had finished, he whispered, "Don't you remember me, ma'am?" They had this little ceremony, where they presented him with a certificate and a pen. He more or less handed the pen back. "I can't write with it, sir," he said something like that. After this little incident, I went over and took him in my arms. That was the only time I let somebody see what I felt. It took a lot for him to do that, and it sort of said what that prize was all about to me.
③ have + 宾语 + 过去分词(遭遇)④ 序数词 + 不定式作定语 ⑤ 过去进行表将来(was coming to ...)⑥ what 引导宾语从句 ⑦ It took ... for sb to do ⑧ sort of / something like / more or less(模糊限制语)。
It took ... / what ... was all about 式的含蓄句收尾。至少 3 处模糊限制语(sort of / something like / more or less),全段不出现「感动 / 愤怒 / 心酸」等直白情绪词。
