Text 1
M: Do I need a card to enter the building?
W: Yes. You'll get your card this afternoon. Now let me show you around and say hello to everyone. And then we'll talk about your job duties.

Text 2
W: Would you like some more roast beef? It's the chef's signature dish.
M: No, thanks. It's really good. But I can't manage any more.

Text 3
W: Hey, look at this one in the newspaper: Fishermen Fishing at Lake Victoria in Tanzania.
M: Wow, that's awesome. I like the unique atmosphere caught by the photographer.

Text 4
W: It's almost midnight, Max. You've got a long drive tomorrow.
M: Okay. Another fifteen minutes from my travel blog. And I'll be done.

Text 5
W: Hello, Mr. Waterman. This is Sarah Jones. I'm stuck on the highway. There's a serious accident. I'm afraid I can't arrive before noon. Could we meet this afternoon?
M: Okay. I'll see my doctor at one and will be available after two.

Text 6
M: Lisa, you're English, but you live here. What do you love about Copenhagen?
W: It has everything big cities offer—cafés, theaters, museums—but it is still relaxing and manageable. Unlike London, you don't feel constant pressure here.
M: Was this lifestyle why you first came?
W: No, I originally came for a three-month project at a law firm. After finishing it, they offered me a permanent job. I took it and stayed.

Text 7
W: Garden hotel. May I help you?
M: Hello, this is Mike Lee from Gilbert company. We'd like to book a dinner for next Tuesday.
W: Certainly, Mr. Lee. Could you let me know how many guests you're expecting? And if you have a specific budget in mind?
M: Yes, we're expecting twenty people. And we're aiming for thirty pounds per person.
W: Understood. Is this for a special occasion?
M: Yes. It's to honor a staff member who is retiring next month.
W: That sounds lovely. What time would you like the dinner to start?
M: At six thirty pm.
W: OK. Would you like a detailed menu with prices?
M: Yes. Could you email it to mikelee @ gilbert.com?
W: No problem. I'm on it.

Text 8
W: Dear listeners. The song we've just heard was made with an AI version of Jenny's singing voice.
M: Yeah. Earlier this year, Jenny announced that she'd let anybody make a song using her AI voice as long as they were entitled and shared their profits with her. And in just a few weeks, more than three hundred new songs were created using her AI voice.
W: Incredible. Just imagine: Jenny may have been at home, drinking a glass of wine, while her AI clone voice worked hard to sing her songs. This could be an attractive new business model for a pop star.
M: Indeed. But some of our listeners called to say they want to hear Jenny's real voice. Now let's play one of her greatest hits: Show me your love.

Text 9
M: Dr. Evans, you just said that these ancient texts are actually the recipes from ancient Babylonia. Can you tell us more?
W: Ancient Babylonia is home to many of the things that we use in our cooking today. I bet about fifty percent of the energy you need every day comes from vegetables or animals that originated in this area.
M: Why have these texts taken so long to come to light?
W: These ancient texts have been known since the 1920s but were thought to be medical texts. In the 1940s, Mary Hussey, an American scholar, suggested that they might be about food. But people didn't believe her until French author, Jean Bottéro, in the 1980s was asked to write an article about cooking in the past. He had heard about the texts, so he went to Yale University, and found out that they were indeed about food.

Text 10
Before we begin today's experiment, let's review the lab rules. First, safety glasses must be worn at all times, even if you're only watching. Second, never mix chemicals unless the instructions tell you to do so. Today we're using a strong acid which can cause serious burns if it touches your skin. If any chemical container is knocked over, don't panic. Tell me immediately and I'll handle the cleanup. Also, keep your hair tied back and avoid wearing loose clothes. We will work in pairs. One person will handle the tools while the other records the data. Switch roles after every three trials to ensure everyone gets practice. Remember: the goal is accurate data, not speed. If you finish early, do not start a new experiment. Instead, clean your workspace thoroughly. Any questions? No? All right. Let's have a safe and productive class.

Text 1
M: We’re going to the park for a picnic. Would you like to come, Rose?
W: I’d love to, but I have to go downtown to get Kevin a birthday present. He invited me to his party.

Text 2
W: Larry, how is your swimming class going?
M: Well, believe it or not, we haven’t touched the water so far. It’s just the same bodybuilding exercises every day.
W: No hurry. It’ll be fine.

Text 3
M: What’s for dinner tonight?
W: Baked beans.
M: Not beans again! I remember we’ve got some carrots and potatoes left.
W: We ate them up yesterday.

Text 4
W: You’re always working! In the office and at home! You should go to parks or to theaters.
M: I have no time for parks or theaters, honey.

Text 5
M: Do you know Helen and Judy in the IT department?
W: Sure. We studied in the same university. Helen is lively and talkative, while Judy is just the opposite.

Text 6
W: Good morning, sir. Can I help you?
M: Yes, I’ve booked a ticket for June 22nd to Swansea. I’d like to see if there’s an earlier flight available.
W: What date do you have in mind?
M: I’d prefer the 18th if possible.
W: I’m sorry, there are no departures for the 18th. We have a flight leaving on the 15th and the 17th. Will either of these days work for you?
M: The 17th would work better for me. Thank you.

Text 7
W: Congratulations, Alex. You’ve just set a record in rock climbing. How do you feel now?
M: Honestly, I feel great. It’s exactly what I’d hoped for.
W: Tell us about your state of mind before you started.
M: Well, my heart was racing for a few moments. I mean, it’s a huge wall above you with a glass-smooth surface and no handholds.
W: Are you going to climb more today?
M: Probably not, but I’ll do some strength training this afternoon. There’ll be more challenges ahead.

Text 8
W: How was your interview, Bob?
M: It was bad. I didn’t get the job.
W: Oh, no. I’m sorry to hear that.
M: You know what, I think I’ve changed my mind. I want to try something different. Maybe I don’t have to work for someone else. I might start my own business.
W: Oh? What kind of business?
M: What about opening a small restaurant?
W: Well, but are you prepared both mentally and financially?
M: I can start from what I have and I think I’m ready to do it.

W: Sure, Henry, what can I do?
M: I broke Sophia’s toy house yesterday. I need to rebuild it for her.

W: Don’t worry, honey, just putting together some wood pieces shouldn’t be that difficult.
M: It’s more complicated than that. We need to put in all those windows and doors too.
W: Why don’t we just build a simpler one without those small parts?
M: No, we can’t. I’ve promised Sophia a toy house just like the old one.
W: Well, you’re right, but it will take us forever to build it. Maybe we should find Sophia’s grandpa to help us.
M: Good idea.

Text 10
M: OK. Now, let’s briefly review what we have done in the past few days. We set off on Monday morning and arrived in Melbourne after a two-hour bus ride. We started with a guided tour of Eureka Tower. After lunch, we walked along Collins Street, taking in the view of Town Hall. We then took a walk through Chinatown to the State Library. Unexpectedly, we also met Markus Zusak, the author of The Book Thief, at the library. On Tuesday morning, we enjoyed the beauty of the Botanical Gardens, followed by a tour of the Victorian Parliament House in the afternoon. Today is Wednesday. We spent most of the morning on Swanston Street studying the historic architecture. Now, we’ve finished lunch. It’s time to head back to school and you can enjoy the views through the bus windows on the way. A big thank you to my fellow teachers and parent volunteers for your wonderful help. The students had a great time and learned a lot.

Text 1
M: Excuse me, I just arrived on the flight from Melbourne, and my suitcase is missing.
W: We’re very sorry, sir. Could you put down your information in this form? We’ll do everything we can to find your suitcase.
M: OK.

Text 2
M: Have you talked over your future plan with your parents, Sarah?
W: Well, my parents would like me to do my master’s after graduation, but I’m thinking of volunteering as a social worker for a year.
M: Good for you.

Text 3
W: We really need to move, Steve. So many cars go by every day, and no sun comes through the windows.
M: Yeah, this house is kind of old. What do you have in mind?
W: Maybe we should have a look in the suburbs.

Text 4
M: Do you often ski here?
W: No, this is my first time.
M: So how do you like it so far?
W: The snow is brilliant. It would be better if there were fewer people.

Text 5
W: Now we’ve crossed the Stone Bridge. Turn right again. Look, here is the art center. The Grand Theater is two blocks away.
M: Nearly there. We won’t be late then.

Text 6
M: Miss, I’ll need to see your driver’s license.
W: Was I doing something wrong?
M: You’re driving in a school zone around the time school lets out. The speed limit is 15 miles an hour, and you were going 35.
W: But it’s only 2:10 p.m. The students aren’t dismissed until 3:30.
M: Today is Wednesday. Students are dismissed an hour and a half early on Wednesdays.
W: Oh no, you’re right. I just forgot that.

Text 7
M: Hi, Grace. Haven’t seen you for some time!
W: Oh, Kevin. Nice to see you! Are you also here for dinner?
M: Yes. My cousin Fiona is in town. And this is her favorite steakhouse. You met her last year, right?
W: Yes, at Jennifer’s wedding.
M: Right. Look, are you here alone? Would you like to join us?
W: That’s very nice of you. But I’m meeting David and some other friends for dinner. You remember David from Class Two?
M: Of course. He was the captain of our school’s basketball team. I haven’t seen him since graduation.
W: He worked abroad for three years and has just come back.
M: Well, I’ll go and say a quick hello. We definitely should get together sometime and have a drink.

Text 8
W: There’s nothing decent to watch these days on TV.
M: Nothing decent? There’s tons of stuff.
W: They’ve cut down on the number of news programs and the number of documentaries. All have been replaced by these stupid reality shows and game shows, you know.
M: Well, they often make me laugh. People want to watch that kind of thing. It’s good, you know, as long as there’s a balance—there’s a bit of this, a bit of that.
W: Should we be giving people what they want to watch? Or should we be, you know, trying to educate them?
M: Well, TV’s there for entertainment. If you want an education, you go to university or college or something, don’t you?
W: No, I really don’t think so.

Text 9
W: Welcome to Education Update. This is Cathy. We have Robert Hall from Mountainside High School with us today. Hello, Mr. Hall. Could you tell us about the service program in your school?
M: Okay. It goes like this. On certain days each month, adults from the neighborhood sit in class with the students and see what’s going on in the school.
W: That’s interesting. What else can they do?
M: They can also take adult courses in the evenings for both fun and serious learning.
W: What about the students? What can they do in the program?
M: Well, they can change places with adults and go working on a farm, or in a factory, or taking care of the housework.
W: Good. This helps them better understand the lives of their parents and know more about their neighborhood.
M: Yes, students have a chance to work in hospitals, nursing homes, libraries, and even in government offices.
W: So the school is not only part of the students’ lives, but also part of the neighborhood.
M: That’s exactly what our service program is for.
W: Great! Thank you, Mr. Hall.

Text 10
M: Good evening. Tonight, I’ll continue to share how we can use art to spread the word about the changing climate. In our day-to-day lives, climate change can be hard to see. But some places will feel the changes sooner than others.
The city I live in is very flat and close to the waterline. And rising sea levels are already creating floods. So, I decided to do something to make it impossible to ignore. I started an art project called Underwater Homeowners Association and painted numbers onto thousands of large signs. Each number showed how high someone’s house was above sea level. A one would mean that if the sea level rose one foot, the building would flood. I gave the signs to homeowners who put them in their yards. Kids painted more signs and put them near their schools and along busy roads. The project has already had a real-world effect. The people who put the signs in their yards created a real homeowners association to address climate change in their communities.

W: No problem.

Text 3
W: Dad, I can't afford that computer, but I think I really need it for my research.
M: Don't worry, Alice. Just pay as much as you can and I'll make up the rest.
W: Thank you. Then I can place the order.

Text 4
W: Hi, I’m Julie. I'm from the Department of Psychology. What about you?
M: I study Biology. I hope you can understand my English. I’m still learning.

Text 5
M: Linda, I need you to help me with my problem.

W: Hello?
M: Hi, Delia, this is Peter. Are you doing anything Tuesday evening?
W: Not really.
M: I've got two tickets for the National Theater. Would you like to come?
W: Thanks. I'd love to. What's on?
M: Stopper's latest play.
W: Oh, Sonny told me it was very good.
M: Yes, everyone said so. Shall I meet you at your office at 6:00? Then we can go and have a quick snack. The play starts at 7:00.

Text 7
W: Hi, Sam. How is your daughter doing at school?
M: Well, since I bought a smartphone for Julia last summer, it seems the phone has become an extension of her arm. And it has made it impossible for her to concentrate. That really upsets me.
W: You are not alone in that. It is said that 95% of teenagers either own or have access to a smartphone. Some schools have put in place policies, banning or controlling phone use during school hours.
M: I'm all in favor of these policies.
W: Yeah, more and more schools have begun doing this. A friend of mine works at a school, and he told me that these policies had brought about positive changes.

Text 8
W: Max, are you ready to go?
M: Sure, honey. Why are you dressed like that? I thought we were going to play table tennis with Billy and Karen.
W: Oh, change of plan. Billy suggested we go rock climbing instead.
M: But I was really looking forward to playing table tennis.
W: We play table tennis all the time. We’d like to go do some outdoor activities for a change, like rock climbing and horseback riding.
M: Oh, Jessie, I thought the point of this vacation was to relax.
W: Well, we can do something less demanding tomorrow. How about boating on the lake? What do you think?
M: That'll be great. I like the idea of spending some time on the water. I'm sure Billy and Karen will like it, too.

M: Hi, Susanna, I had an interview with Anderson HITECH and they offered me the position of sales manager. I want to let you know before I make my decision.
W: I’m sorry to hear that, Frank, but I appreciate you telling me before you accept the offer.
M: I really enjoy my work here. I put in effort for 5 years to gain more experience, but there seems no hope of being promoted.
W: What would help you decide to stay?
M: I would consider staying if I could change my position. I would love working in this same department, but I would like to be doing something different. And they offered me 6% more than my present salary.
W: When do you have to tell them your decision?
M: They want me to respond by Friday.
W: Let me see. I'll talk to the human resources director and let you know the result on Thursday. Can you wait until then?

W: Hello everyone. Welcome to Creative Day School. This summer we provide two full-time summer camp programs. Both will last the entire time the children are out of school. Our first summer camp is for our four-year-olds, called Mini Camp. This Mini Camp will still have their normal everyday schedule with a lot of fun activities. At least once a week, our mini campers will go on a field trip. These field trips could consist of a day at the beach or exploring the natural museum. Our Older Summer Camp is provided for ages 5 through 12. There are scheduled summer fun activities and games. The children will participate in art, outdoor play, games and much more. Swimming at a nearby pool is often a weekly field trip for ages 6 and up. Other field trips could include bowling, a day at the movies or a picnic in the park. Permission of parents and activity fees are required to participate in all field trips. Now let's watch a five-minute film about last year's programs.

Text 1
M: Thanks for the wonderful weekend, Kate.
W: That's okay. Bob and I are glad you came to see us.
M: Oh, I have to go in. My flight will take off soon. Do contact me when you're in Sydney.
W: Sure, we will.

Text 2
W: Paul, listen to the radio. It's You've Stolen My Heart, one of the songs played at our wedding.
M: Yeah, how beautiful! It's been popular for almost two decades.

Text 3
W: David, forget about Mark. His aunt is in town, so he can't go with us today.
M: Oh, what a pity! It's the last day of the art show.

Text 4
W: How may I help you?
M: I bought a desk and asked for it to be delivered to my house this Friday.
W: Yes, what's the problem?
M: I need to have it delivered this Saturday.

Text 5
W: Next, please.
M: Oh, hi, I missed my 9 o'clock train to Bedford. Do I have to buy another ticket?
W: No. The next train leaves at a quarter to ten at Platform 11.
M: Thank you.

Text 6
W: Honey, have you checked today's weather forecast?
M: Yes, it's cold and wet. There is a warning for strong winds up to 100 kilometers per hour.
W: What are we going to do then?
M: Nothing much. Just stay indoors. There is a risk of falling trees and power lines.
W: Right.
M: And the low temperatures could bring snow to the forest area.
W: I hope it's over quickly.
M: Well, it won't get better until late Wednesday. Anyway, I have to move the car away from the trees.
W: Yeah, you cannot be too careful.

Text 7
W: Hello, Dave. This is Kathy from Sunny California.
M: Hi, Kathy. You finally call. How was the move? All settled in?
W: Sorry, I hadn't called sooner, but it's been a busy month. We're slowly getting things set up in our new home.
M: Yeah, I understand. How are Jeff and the children?
W: Jeff is doing well with his new job, Tom has made many new friends here and has a lot to do. Fiona is fine, though she misses her grandma. By the way, thank you for looking in on my mother from time to time. I call her every week, but it isn't the same as seeing her.
M: No problem. Betty and I are friends now. How is the weather there?
W: It's nice and warm, and we are able to spend some time every week on the beach with the children.
M: That's great.

Text 8
W: Jack, how did you get to school when you were in primary school?
M: I lived close to my school, so I walked every day. Why?
W: Well, I remember that when we were kids, we often walked, rode a bike or caught the bus to school. Few of us were dropped off at the school gate by our parents.
M: I see what you mean, these days you can see traffic jams around schools that drop off at pick-up times, but it’s hard to blame the parents. They have good reasons for driving their kids to school, mostly to do with safety and convenience.
W: You have a point there, but it could also mean children are missing out on much needed exercise and other life skills. Some parents are just being over-protective with their children learning nothing, but living in fear of everything. Studies have found that children who spend more time outside tend to be healthier, better adjusted and better at dealing with stress.

Text 9
M: So Marie, your kitchen garden looks excellent. What made you turn to social media to record your vegetable growing?
W: Initially, I used the online platform as a diary, something to look back on, giving me a sense of achievements and keeping me motivated and moving forward. As time went by, other gardeners and like-minded people began to follow my progress, too.
M: I know you grow lots of fruit on your land. Which would you recommend to beginners as the best to grow?
W: Strawberries would be a good choice. They produce a lot of fruit in their first season.
M: That's cool. Well, do you have plans to try new or any particular crops next year?
W: Next season I will be adding some pear trees to the fruit area. I will be adding more herbs which I can use in the kitchen. After a couple of years of failure, I will try growing carrots again.
M: What advice would you offer someone thinking of doing kitchen gardening?
W: Have a plan of what you want your kitchen garden to look like. Don't be too discouraged if things don't go according to plan. Learn from your mistakes and move on. There's always next season.

Text 10
W: Good morning, everyone. This lesson is a part of our leadership series. Let me start by sharing a story of Richard Rochester, one of the most successful businessmen in Britain. Years ago, I was given the task of organizing a conference in the south of England. I chose a five-star hotel owned by Rochester as the venue. Susan, the receptionist, helped me arrange everything perfectly. Once when we were chatting, I asked Susan if she'd ever met Mr. Rochester. She said yes. Shortly after Mr. Rochester bought the hotel, he made an appointment to see the hotel manager. When he arrived, the first person he met was Susan, who was cleaning the carpet. He chatted with Susan for 30 minutes before keeping his appointment with the manager. He spent all day at the hotel talking with each member of the staff, from the top guy to the lady who cleaned the toilets. Six months later, Mr. Rochester paid another visit. Susan had been promoted to receptionist, but he recognized her immediately and addressed her by name. He even remembered that she had a little girl and what her name was. Now, I don't believe that Richard Rochester has that good memory. He must have written a lot of notes after his first visit and read them over again before that second visit. It's time-consuming, but it shows the importance he places on human relationships. I think that's one of the secrets of his success.

W: Look, we have time for hamburger at this former restaurant.
M: Forget that. I know a new restaurant on Maple Street not far from our company. Is that okay with you?
W: Perfect.

Text 2
M: Hi, Vicky. I remember our class presentation is on Wednesday, but you said it's on Thursday. Are you sure?
W: Oh sorry. It was a slip of the tongue. I meant Tuesday for sure.

Text 3
M: Allen's furniture. Can I help you?
W: Hi. I'm the one who asked about the price of a glass tea table top. Just now I'm sorry, I made a mistake. The size should be 75 centimeters by 50 centimeters.
M: Oh. That'll make a difference in the price. Hold on and let me find out.

Text 4
W: These are our new arrivals. Every man should own at least one woollen sweater. Don't you think?
M: I agree. Any suggestions?
W: The one with two pockets sells best this year. Lightweight and stylish. Would you like to try it on?

Text 5
W: How do you like your school, Tom?
M: Oh, I like it a lot and I also like the area. The nearby recreation center is cool. Thank you, mom.
W: What really leaves you happy with your new home?

Text 6
W: I don't know if I want to go to college, I don't think I'll do very well there.
M: Why not?
W: Because I'm not smart.
M: Yeah, it can be scary.
W: Did you ever come close to dropping out, Dad?
M: No. But I worried a lot before I went, I thought college would be full of brains. Once I got there, I found out that most of the kids were just like me.

Text 7
M: Hello, listeners. People around the world are reporting that birds are much louder these days. Now I've connected with Dr. Salinger and let's hear what she will say.
W: We feel that they're singing louder because they sing in typically noisy places. But when the noise is gone, they sing quieter than they normally do.
M: In other words, birds are like us in a noisy bar, for example, people will raise their voices.
W: Exactly. We know that birds sing quieter on the weekend mornings. This is because the noise levels are lower than the weekday rush. That's probably what's happening now. Here I've recorded a call of the songbird. Listen to see if you can hear the difference.

Text 8
M: Hi. I don't think we've met before. I'm Mike.
W: Hi, Mike. My name is Gina. Nice to meet you.
M: Nice to meet you, Gina. Where do you come from?
W: Originally I'm from Canada, but we moved to Australia when I was about 5 years old. Now my parents live in Tokyo. How about you, Mike?
M: I was born in Glasgow and we lived there until I was six. Then since my father worked for an international trade company, we moved all over the place.
W: Yeah. Where are some of the places you've lived?
M: Most of the time we lived abroad. We spent a total of 10 years in Japan, Germany and Korea. We came back to the UK only 2 years ago, but I think my parents would prefer to stay overseas for another 20 years.
W: Wow. It sounds like you've had an interesting life.

Text 9

M: Absolutely. A trip to Mars is hugely exciting. I'm always ready for it.
W: I know you can watch movies on the space station. What's your favorite space movie? Some people asked.

Passage 1
Popcorn is a popular snack, but its origin dates back thousands of years. Back then in North America, native people first discovered corn burst open when heated.
In 1519, when the Spanish army conquered some parts of North America, a soldier first saw popcorn when he met the native people. Popcorn was important to the natives as food and as decorations for their headdresses on great occasions.
Around 1612, French explorers around the Great Lakes in America met native people who used heated sand to make popcorn.
Story has it that a native man brought a bag of popcorn to celebrate the big harvest in 1621 in America.
Popcorn gained popularity at fairs starting from the late 19th century due to its affordability and ease of consumption on the go.
The mass production and commercialization of popcorn began during the early 20th century with the invention of the device designed specifically for making this snack. However, popcorn didn't become popular among moviegoers until the mid-20th century.
Today, it is enjoyed worldwide both in its traditional form and with various flavors.

11. What is the passage mainly about?
12. According to the passage, what led to the mass production and commercialization of popcorn?
13. When did popcorn become a popular snack in movie theaters?

Passage 2
In today's class, I'll introduce the scientific method. It is a process used by scientists to explore the natural world and acquire new knowledge. It follows five steps: observing, proposing an explanation, experimenting, analyzing, and making conclusions.
First, a scientist observes interesting things in the world. For example, he might notice that plants grow bigger when watered daily. Based on his observations, he then comes up with a possible explanation that needs to be proved. In our example, the scientist assumes that watering plants daily helps them grow larger.
After that, he designs and carries out experiments to test this explanation. He might set up an experiment where some plants are watered daily while others are not, to see if there's a difference in growth between the two groups.
After collecting data from his experiments, the scientist analyzes it to determine whether his explanation is supported. In our example, the growth of both groups of plants would be measured and compared.
Finally, the scientist draws a conclusion about what he has learned. If his explanation was correct, he might adjust it to be more specific or test it further. If it was incorrect, a new explanation would be needed for his observations. So if the watered plants didn't grow larger, he would need to consider alternative explanations and test them instead.

14. What is the passage mainly about?
15. According to the passage, what is the next step after a scientist comes up with an explanation for his observations?
16. If watering plants didn't make them grow larger, what would the scientist need to do?

Passage 3
A: Excuse me, does any bus go from the main campus to Sunshine Square?
B: Sure.
A: Nice, when does it run?
B: The first bus leaves the main campus at 6 a.m., and the last one at 6 p.m. Wait, I think the schedule changed not long ago. Hmm, yes, now it runs till 8 at night.
A: Okay, does it come at regular intervals?
B: It runs every two hours.
A: Is it the same on weekends?
B: No, it runs from 7 to 7, and on a less frequent schedule every three hours.
A: I see. What are the pickup points?
B: The library, the health clinic, the community center, and the Happy Supermarket.
A: Great, the Happy Supermarket is next to my apartment block. By the way, can I take my bike on the bus?
B: I'm not sure, maybe you could ask the driver, or you might just ride your bike to the subway station and take the train instead.
A: Right, thanks for all your help.
B: My pleasure.

18. When does the last bus leave the main campus on Saturday?

Text 1
W: Could you please tell me how I can get to the student dorm building?
M: Sure. Turn left when you walk out of this register office. Pass the bookstore and you’ll see it.

Text 2
M: We couldn’t ask for a better day, could we, Barbara?
W: I know, Steve. There isn’t a cloud in the sky. I love this time of year.
M: Me too. The flowers are beautiful but calling for rain though.

Text 3
M: We got any plans this weekend?
W: We might start with our vegetable garden, then the barbecue.
M: Sounds fun, but I still want to go fishing with George.

Text 4
M: Lisa, I saw Jack this morning.
W: You mean the former designer of our company? What’s he doing these days?
M: He said he’s got a new job as an art reporter.

Text 5
W: Do you often go to the student union, Andrew?
M: Pretty much. Once in a while I meet friends there, and I spend a lot of time organizing activities in different clubs or associations.

Text 6
W: What do you think, Terry?
M: Well, it has one more bedroom than the last flat and the sitting room is big.
W: But there is not enough cupboard space in the kitchen.
M: It’s cheaper than the last one we saw and it is in a good neighborhood.
W: Well, maybe we’ll have to see if the agent has anything else to show us.

Text 7
M: Thank you, Mrs. Johnson, for what you’ve shared with our listeners. Now, please tell us, do you sometimes feel worried about your daughter, now that she’s grown up?
W: Oh, I worry about her like all parents do. After she graduated from medical school, she went to volunteer medical service in Africa.
M: Wow!
W: That’s okay if communication was fine. But if there was no Internet or telephone connection, we could sometimes go two weeks without getting in touch with each other. That often worries me.

Text 8
W: Now, sell yourself in a minute please.
M: I graduated from university two years ago, and have since been working in an accounting company. Apart from the knowledge and skills related to my major, I’m really good with computers. I have a large amount of experience working with big data. I think I’m well qualified for the accountant position here.
W: Good! Why did you choose this company?
M: Peterson has been my dream company all along. You value progress and focus on the quality of work more than the quantity. The flexible working hours and working from home is also attractive.
W: Ah huh. What do you think is your biggest weakness?
M: Well, when I work, I often concentrate so much on what I’m doing that I may have a hard time dealing with things that come up unexpectedly. That may be annoying to some people.
W: All right. Thank you very much.

Text 9
W: So Robert, I guess you must be well into your third decade as a writer. How is life treating you?
M: Fourth decade as a writer. Hmm, let me get my calculator out. Well, I guess I’ve been writing novels since the 1980s. So you’re right. But I have been writing all my life. And to answer your question, life has been treating me excellently.
W: Can I ask you about your childhood? Were you a bookish child?
M: In a strange way, I was a non-reader until I turned nine. I used to play basketball in the schoolyards of Brooklyn. My father was a high school teacher of physics and chemistry. And he was a big reader. He would bring books back from his high school library. One day, I read the last chapter of a book, the title of which I’ve long since forgotten. I liked it so much that I started reading the remainder. Interestingly, I read the chapters backwards until I got to the beginning. I really loved the experience, and I soon became an eager reader. Then my father would bring piles of books home from the library. And I would read them all, and they were all fiction. I must add that I started reading the books from the start, as opposed to working backwards.

Text 10
M: Hello, I’m Maxim Vengerov, and I’m very happy to share with you my connection with open Tchaikovsky competition. It was June 1986 when I came to Moscow to participate in open Tchaikovsky competition at the age of 10 from Chelyabinsk. This was actually the turning point of my life. Then I attended a world music festival in Berlin. And it was interesting to say that a kid made his breakthrough already at the age of 10. And that was me. Now as a judge of the competition, I can see clearly the huge challenges facing the musicians in the competition. Where else can you see young players playing within ten days classical works and Russian traditional music before coming to the final stage? As a musician, it’s important to give maximum attention and time to your own reflections of your own feelings. So, what I’m really looking for in the competition is to meet someone who can touch me musically. I want to see the seed, at least the seed of the great tree that can grow. I would go for this violinist. I would go for this musician.

W: Jack, are you going camping with your friends this weekend?
M: It depends. If it’s sunny, we’ll go.
W: The weatherman says it’s going to rain.
M: In that case, we’ll go to the cinema instead.

Text 2
W: Excuse me, could you mind my bags for a moment? I want to buy some food at the convenience store.
M: No problem. But be quick. It was announced that my train will arrive in 10 minutes.

Text 3
W: Bob came out of hospital last Friday. Have you got a chance to visit him?
M: I plan to see him this Saturday.
W: Aren’t you going to the conference then?
M: No. It has been rescheduled for next Monday.

Text 4
M: Sorry, Miss. We made a terrible mistake adding up the bill. Here is the ten dollars we have to return to you.
W: Oh, I didn’t notice that. It’s OK. Don’t blame the waiter. He’s been really nice.

Text 5
W: Do you think we should get Steve a book for the New Year?
M: Books are good. But Steve wouldn’t take just any book. He has had this particular one on geography.

Text 6
M: Hello, Sara.
W: Hello, David. I can’t come for dinner tonight. Sorry.
M: Oh, what happened?
W: We’ve got a new case and things get pretty crazy here in the office.
M: Well, then I’ll come to you.
W: No, no, not tonight. Let me see if I can arrange another night.
M: Sara, please. We need to talk. It’s about my job.
W: Then tell me on the phone.
M: No, it’s better if we do it in person. How about tomorrow night?
W: I’m not sure. You can give me a call tomorrow afternoon.
M: OK.

Text 7
W: Jim will call on us this afternoon. Do you know where he is now?
M: Er... wait. Let me see. He has sent two messages saying that he’s done with his work at the office and got a taxi and... and he’ll arrive in twenty minutes.
W: We can’t keep him waiting outside our home. We have to hurry.
M: But it takes at least half an hour to get out of the city center by bus. Look at the traffic.
W: Let’s get off. We can save at least twenty minutes by walking through the park.
M: Are you sure?
W: Yes. A hundred percent.

Text 8
W: Morning, Mark.
M: Morning, Clara. How was your weekend?
W: Great. I went to my grandpa’s. He invited us to pick vegetables on his farm. My daughter had a great time there. What about you?
M: Oh, I had a truly incredible experience. I dropped by a yard sale on Saturday and got several books.
W: Novels?
M: A novel and two poetry collections. As I leafed through the novel, a piece of paper fell out. It was an air ticket from 2012. The flight was from Los Angeles to Chicago and the name on the ticket was Ashley Louis.
W: Was it?
M: Yes. Ashley, my sister. In 2012, she lived in Los Angeles and her husband worked in Chicago. Both of them often flew between two cities. I asked the seller where he got the book. He said it was bought at a second-hand bookstore in Los Angeles three years ago. Last year, he and his family moved from Los Angeles to Philadelphia.
W: So, all the way cross the country, your sister’s old book landed in your hands. That’s really crazy.

Text 9
W: Victor, you’ve been here in Indiana for six weeks now. How are you feeling?
M: I think I’ve got used to college life, going to classes, working out and hanging out with my friends. Though there’s pressure to meet deadlines, life here is never boring.
W: What’s been hard about being an Indiana basketball player?
M: Well, the training is very competitive, weightlifting and running every day. It’s not like high school. In high school, I really didn’t have to do that. I’m just trying to get used to it. And I think I am.
W: At this point, how do you see yourself fitting into this group?
M: I think we’re all different. George is from Britain. Chris and Leo are from Australia. I’m from France. And the rest are Americans. But I get along with everybody. You know, we are really starting to bond. It’s great to see how we grow each day as a team.
W: Thanks, Victor. I wish you a very happy and fruitful stay in Indiana.

M: We have to find a parking space. Let's drive around the block one more time. Did you say the restaurant has no street-parking at all?
W: None, I checked it. Look, there's a space.

Text 2
M: You have to go now, Judy, or you'll miss your flight. It's an hour’s drive to the airport.
W: I'm leaving. Don't forget to water my flowers. Just a minute, where's my ticket, Dad?

Text 3
M: Laura, what's in the mailbox?
W: It's a thank-you note from our neighbor. They thank us for visiting them last week when the baby was born. They also invite us to have dinner next Friday.
M: Are they back home now?
W: Should be!

Text 4
W: Good afternoon, Paper Museum.
M: Hello, could you tell me your opening hours for Saturday?
W: Yeah, we're open from 10 in the morning to 5 in the afternoon.
M: Thanks.

Text 5
M: Excuse me, where is the hotel gym, please?
W: It's on the top floor. You can take the lift over there.
M: Do I have to pay extra?
W: No, sir, you just need to take your room key with you.

Text 6
W: Mr. Wilson, students from Class 2 want to visit the museum. Will it be all right if I take them there this weekend?
M: How about their revision test? Are they through with it?
W: Yes, they are.
M: In that case, you can go ahead. Try to finish it within one day so that the students still have a whole day to rest on Sunday.
W: All right, I'll manage.

Text 7
M: Hi, Linda. Fancy seeing you here. How long have you been shopping?
W: Almost an hour. I have a lot to buy. My daughter Melissa's birthday is coming. I'm trying to get her a good gift, but I don't know what to choose. She seems to have everything she loves.
M: Yeah, the same as Clara. We've already had bags of toys she's no longer playing with, so this year we didn't buy her material things. We gave her an experience gift.
W: What's that?
M: A city pass with which she can visit twelve different attractions, including the National History Museum, the Science Museum, the zoo, and more.
W: How much is it?
M: Fifty dollars per person for a year long pass. I bought three for the whole family.
W: So you can have a different outing every month for the entire year. What a great idea!

Text 8
M: Helen, busy doing anything?
W: Oh, Kevin, I'm preparing a presentation for the city library. It's about a girl named Tracy Woods.
M: What's special about her?
W: It was an amazing story. She brought specially trained dogs to special education schools and helped children to build confidence. She believes that dogs can help children in ways we can’t. Dogs don't judge and they don't care who you are or what you look like.
M: But putting dogs into a school? Aren't they going to mess up the school?
W: Don't worry. All the dogs are assessed and trained properly. There are now 40 dogs working with children aged from 6 to 18.

M: Tell us about the six months you recently spent at the workshop of the Film Centre.
W: It was an unbelievable experience, teaching young actors and actresses, and working with some great acting artists. It was also great to work in various labs such as directors, writers and so on. It's very helpful for making you a really well-rounded and active member of the film and television industry.
M: Thank you very much, Emily. We look forward to your new season.

Text 10
Hi, everyone! This is the monthly meeting of our club. We've been fortunate to have got good advice from some famous athletes on how to improve our skills and build up our body. Today, we'll hear something different. We're honored to have Emma Wilson here. Emma is a health expert and lecturer from UBC, the University of British Columbia.
Emma worked for a football team in Manchester, then for a very successful rugby team in Dublin, and finally ended up working here in Vancouver. Emma says it's challenging to be a health expert because people can be easily influenced by advertisements that lack scientific support. Also, people aren't willing to change their views about food and nutrition, as there is so much confusing information online. It's really important to hear what experts say, and that's why we've invited Emma here. She isn't going to tell us about everything we should eat, but she will teach us to make better choices. Let's welcome Emma William.

M: Jenny, you can just drop me here.
W: But we are two streets away from the office.
M: It’s fine. I had a big breakfast, and feel like a bit of walk.

Text 2
W: Hello, George. You look tired. Didn’t sleep well last night?
M: No, not at all. I had to work flat out to meet the project deadline. Now I’m really feeling a bit run-down.

Text 3
W: John, can’t we go someplace and talk? It’s so noisy in here.
M: Well, there is a small park across the street. It’s usually not crowded at this time of day.

Text 4
W: We’ve got to do something about the neighbor’s dog.
M: Why? Has he been into your flower garden again?
W: The flower garden, the garbage can and yesterday he started digging holes in the yard.

Text 5
M: Hello, we have a reservation in the name of Mr. Johns. Is there any table by the window?
W: Sorry, we’ve got this corner table for you. It’s quiet here, not close to the door.

Text 6
W: Dave, don’t forget we are invited out to dinner tonight.
M: Oh yeah. I almost forgot. What time?
W: 7:30. We should leave the house by 6:30. You know how bad the traffic is that time of night.
M: It’s informal, isn’t it?
W: Yeah. You can wear your new sports jacket, the one I got you as an anniversary gift.
M: Okay. Well, I’ve got to go. I’ll try to get home a little earlier today.
W: Good.

Text 7
M: We need to decide exactly when we’re going to move. Any suggestions?
W: I think July would be the best time. Our sales are always down that month. We could move all the office equipment at a weekend—do everything at once.
M: I think a weekend’s too short. Maybe we should do it department by department.
W: What do you mean?
M: Well, each week a different department will move. That way, there will always be people here to handle customer inquiries, phone calls, and so on.
W: Hmm, that’s a good idea.

Text 8
W: So, Mr. Peter Sayles, I’ve been curious to know what were the early connections in your life that led you into the art field.
M: My grandfather was an art dealer in Munich. They had a great museum in Munich. He took me to the museum. And I responded very strongly to what I saw on the walls there. I learned about art from him. I learned about looking at art from him. I think that’s what really got me started. Then, many years later, after I got out of the army, I went to study art history at the University of Chicago.
W: Tell us more about your experiences of looking at art with your grandfather.
M: Well, we looked at the famous paintings by the great artists like Rembrandt, Botticelli and Albrecht Dürer. Rubens’ paintings were my favorites. Yes, I remember these things. This was when I was between 10 and 15. When I was 14, I was so anxious to see more art that a friend of mine and I bicycled across the Alps to see Venice. That was a big adventure.

Text 9
W: Hi, John! Haven’t seen you for ages!
M: Hi, Susan! Fancy meeting you here on the train!
W: How is your college life?
M: What can I say? I’ve survived.
W: What happened?
M: Well, early last March I started doing a part-time job in a law firm. A few weeks before I had started writing my term paper. I thought I could finish it by August.
W: That was a pretty good idea trying to have some work experience.
M: For the first three weeks, you know, I tried. I got up early and worked for an hour on my paper before going to work. But work was so fun, I met tons of new people and soon I couldn’t find even a minute for my paper. So, I had to quit my part-time job and finally finished my paper in October.
W: Well, it’s never too late to mend. It’s kind of hard to find a balance between what you have to do and what you want to do.
M: Yeah, it’s really important for me to balance study and work. And I think I should learn to exercise some self-control.

Text 10
M: Being an athlete is very fun, painful and exciting. Every time I come to the track, I feel like I’m out of this place. This is Botswana National Stadium. This is where I train. When I saw Usain Bolt running in 2012 London Olympics, I was amazed. Just watching him run got me motivated. I quit being a chess player and started to run. I went to the 2016 Olympics, and went to the finals at the age of 18. And, wow, I finished fifth. It was a dream come true to me, but I still wanted more. The training is super hard, but the hardest part for me is that I got an injury—an injury which may take me out for years. For a period of time, as a young athlete, I didn’t know what to do. I lost focus. But now, I’m back on the track. I really want to be there at the Olympics, and do what I did before, do much, much greater. I don’t care about the gold. I don’t care about the silver. I want to do my best. You know, take everything and show it to the world.

M: Now, what seems to be the trouble, Mrs. Stevens?
W: I’ve been very dizzy lately. And last night, I had some chest pain.
M: Don’t worry. Let me have a look.

Text 6
W: Wow. That was a great match. I really like watching tennis games.
M: Me too. I think tennis is an exciting sport.
W: I think so. Do you play tennis, John?
M: Yes, but not very well. Do you play?
W: A little. How about a game on Tuesday afternoon?
M: Sure.

Text 7
M: Mrs. White, I’m afraid we have to put you on a strict diet. From now on, you’re going to have to stay away from salty food.
W: Does that mean I can’t have any more fast food?
M: Right. You can’t have any fried food or steaks.
W: What about breakfast food like eggs and sausages?
M: Those are all bad for you. But you can have porridge, bread and orange juice.
W: Well, what about lunch and dinner?
M: Have a salad for lunch. As for dinner, you can have all the vegetables you want. Fish and chicken are also okay.
W: What about dessert? Can I still have ice cream?
M: Yes, but not too much.

Text 8
M: Hi Nancy! You look worried. What’s wrong?
W: Well Daniel, have you ever felt nervous on stage?
M: Sure. Do you remember that play I was in a few years ago? I knew my lines, but I was terrified to have to recite them in front of an audience. As soon as I saw the crowd of people down there, my heart beat so fast that I was unable to say a single word.
W: That’s how I feel just thinking about the spelling competition next week.
M: I didn’t know you made it to the finals.
W: I’m worried I’ll get nervous and freeze on stage. I might forget how to spell everything, even my own name. I don’t know what to do.
M: Nancy, I know that you’re not going to forget how to spell your name. I’ll help you get through this. I’ll go to the school hall with you to practice. Then I’ll teach you an exercise my baseball coach taught me. Believe me. It works.
W: I feel much better now. Thanks, Daniel.

Text 9
W: Hello, ladies and gentlemen! Today, we have invited Prof. Stone to talk about the role of elderly people in our society. Welcome to our show, Prof. Stone.
M: To begin with, I’d like to tell a story from my own life. Several years ago, when my grandparents were well into their 80s, they were no longer able to care for themselves very well. My grandfather was afraid of leaving the only home they had known for the past 60 years. The idea of having to sell their home and move into a retirement home was an extremely painful experience for them. Indeed, old age for them, and many old Americans can mean not only the possible failure of one’s health, but the loss of identity and self-worth.
W: Yes, it’s true. What do you have to say about the problem of old age?
M: Many experts have given talks here that have focused on the medical care, and the development of public services for senior citizens. Today, I’d like to focus my comments on the meaningful roles that elderly can play and should play in our society.

Text 10
W: Talking about personal relationships, well, I’d naturally think of my relationship with my mother. Whenever I need help, my mother is always there for me. She often tells me that I can be anyone I want, as long as I’m confident of myself. She sees my talent and pushes me to do the best I possibly can. As I was growing up, we were often on the move. I had to admit that moving so often made me feel lonely. But my mother did everything she could to help me feel happy. In fact, so much traveling was really a good thing because it made us close. I respect my mother so much as she never treats me as a child, but as an equal. She gives me the freedom to make mistakes and to learn from them all. Unlike friendships that can fade or break, I know I’ll always be connected to my mother no matter what I face. She is not just a role model, but someone I love.

W: I was in Mallorca last week.
M: Oh, what were you doing there?
W: My best friend worked there. And I went to visit her. It was a good chance to practice my Spanish.

Text 2
M: Ruth, I've got this terrible cold and I have to see a doctor. I am afraid I can't go to the class. Could you help me hand in my lab report to Dr. Davidson?
W: Sure, no problem. Just take care of yourself and don't worry about the class.

Text 3
M: Marie, if no one takes care of your children while you're away, Jennifer and I will be glad to have them stay with us.
W: That's very kind of you. But they've already left for their Grandma's. You know, Suzy lives close by.

Text 4
M: Hurry up with your food, Sally. They say there's a big storm coming. We'd better get home before that.
W: Okay, I'm done. Let's get back to the car. Could you carry these shopping bags?
M: Oh, sure.

Text 5
M: We deep fried fish three days ago in the kitchen, but the unpleasant smell stays.
W: There is a method you can try. Every time you make coffee, dry the leftover coffee grounds and keep them in small bowls, then place the bowls in the kitchen.

Text 6
W: Are you a football fan, Gomez?
M: Yes, I go to the stadium whenever there is a good game. And if I can't get a ticket, I watch the game on TV. That way, they're less exciting, though.
W: Is the ticket expensive?
M: It depends. It usually costs about 20 to 50 dollars. Last time I paid 25.
W: That's not very expensive. Maybe we can go together some time.
M: Great. It'll be more fun to watch the game with a friend.

Text 7
W: You're out the whole afternoon, Alex? What did you do?
M: I took a walk by myself.
W: You just kept walking and walking for four hours?
M: Actually, it's not so boring. Walking in the woods is a grand adventure. Your feet can take you to the most amazing places.
W: What did you do in the woods?
M: I smelled the flowers, looked at the birds, and yeah, I picked many tree leaves. I will make bookmarks with them. Look!
W: Aren't they beautiful?
M: Then I met Bob at the lake. He was fishing while his kids were having a swim.
W: Did you talk to him?
M: No, I walked on and took a lot of pictures. There's just so much out there to see.

Text 8
W: David, how was your holiday?

W: No, John will be back then, and he'll get me home. Thank you, Michael.
M: That's okay. See you tomorrow.

Text 10
W: Hello, everyone. Today I'll talk about how to improve your pronunciation. Language researchers say pronunciation and fluency are the biggest barriers, followed by grammar, in effective spoken English. However, most people don't regard pronunciation as a very important part of communication skills. They're more focused on vocabulary. One reason is that most people are not even aware of their mispronunciations. So it's important to first find out the words you mispronounce. You should listen to experts, by experts, I mean those who are less likely to make pronunciation mistakes. When listening to them, pay attention to words that sound strange, strange because you pronounce the same words differently. When you come across such words, check a dictionary to confirm their exact pronunciations. You can also search for difficult-to-pronounce words and names, and make a list of them. The last suggestion is to read aloud. Now you've got the correct pronunciations of the words, it's time to practice reading them every day.

Text 10
M: Hello, I’m Jeff Anderson from Coventry, England. And in today’s program, I’d like to share with you a special kind of English culture — the football. A lot of people in England are crazy about football. During the football season, whenever there is a big match, all the flags for local football teams, such as Liverpool and Newcastle are hung outside every window or even spread proudly on T-shirts or scarves. There is an atmosphere of excitement in the air. Groups of young men crowd into dark packed pubs, staring at television screens. Of course, they are covered head to toe in the colors of their team. They shout and scream in sadness when their team loses a goal or with joy when there is a moment of success. You do not have to be a fan of football to get caught up in the excitement, as far as victories are concerned. England had its big moment in 1966 in Wimbledon Stadium. The World Cup victory is in the hearts and minds of all football fans. Now, whenever England is playing a big match, red and white covers every inch of every pub, a symbol of hope — the English flag. While football has never been something I’m particularly interested in. For years, I’ve had to pretend excitement and pick a team to support. You cannot say you don’t like or do not follow football in England, as often this will lead to a long dialogue in which someone will begin telling you why you should support their team.

W: No, it doesn’t.
M: That’s OK. The underwater filming is important for me, actually. How much is this?
W: It costs 650 euros.
M: Oh, that’s a bit expensive for me. Have you got anything similar but less expensive?
W: Well, here is the sale of the week. It's excellent for the price. Only 470 euros and it includes...

W: A big dog celebrates a big birthday this year. Clifford, the Big Red Dog, first appeared 50 years ago, along with Emily Elizabeth, the little girl who loves him. Today we have Norman Bridwell, to talk with NPR's reporter on his dog’s 50th birthday. So, Norman tell us how it all started.
M: Well, it was 1962 and I was a struggling, not very successful artist in New York. My wife suggested that I try my hand at painting for children's books. So I did ten paintings and took them to publishers. I was turned down everywhere, except at one publisher, where a young woman told me I wasn’t very good. So if I wanted to paint for a book, I'd need to write one on my own.
W: So you did?
M: Umm, the woman pointed to a painting I’d done, of a little girl with a big red dog, and she said “Maybe that's a story”. And I went home, and over that weekend, I wrote the story Clifford the Big Red Dog, and was shocked when it was accepted for publication because I'd never written anything before.
W: I see. How wonderful!
M: Yes, it was. My wife was also in shock when she did realize it wasn’t a dream. But it was just luck.
W: And that luck turned into 90 Clifford books that have sold 126 million copies in 13 languages.

M: Hello, everyone. Today I'm going to talk about small talk, that is, short conversations people often have with strangers they meet. Such exchanges occur at bus stops, on buses, while waiting in line, almost anywhere that strangers gather close together. As a matter of fact, these short conversations are a good way for people to say hello and express friendliness. Such conversations usually cover a wide range of topics. The topics may include weather, customer service, movies, TV shows, local sports or latest news. But you should always keep it in your mind that private questions about salaries, family life, religious beliefs and politics should be avoided during these conversations. Besides, it's better to ask open-ended questions. If you ask visitors “Do you like our city?” They may say simply, "Yes". On the other hand, if you ask, "What do you think of our city?" They will have more freedom in answering. This type of question also shows that you're interested in them. If you appear interested in what people are saying, they'd feel more comfortable talking with you.
