一、课文原文及逐段翻译
Lesson 1 Enlightening a Mind 第一课 启迪心灵
第1段原文:Helen Keller was an exceptionally special girl. By the time she was seven years old, she still couldn’t speak, read or write and needed to have everything done for her. This was because she couldn’t see or hear. With these severe restrictions to her communication, Helen’s behaviour was often unbearable. She was sometimes troublesome, stubborn and angry, and had a tendency to break things when no one understood her.
译文:海伦•凯勒是一个非常特殊的女孩。她七岁时,仍不会说话,不能读书也不会写字,一切都需要别人照顾。这是因为她看不见也听不见。这些严重的障碍限制了海伦的正常交流,也让她的行为常常令人难以忍受。海伦有时很烦人、很固执,而且很易怒。如果没有人能理解她的意思,她就会摔东西。
第2段原文:Helen’s parents got a superb teacher recommended to them, a woman named Anne Sullivan. Anne was a teacher and former student at a school for the blind in Boston. She’d had eyesight problems early in life as well so she could relate to Helen’s difficulties.
译文:海伦的父母经人推荐,聘请了一位名叫安妮·莎莉文的优秀老师。安妮曾是波士顿一所盲人学校的老师,也曾在那儿上过学。她小时候也视力有障碍,所以更能理解海伦所面临的困境。
第3段原文:Anne’s technique to teach Helen language was simple and straightforward. Anne spelt words by writing on Helen’s hand so that Helen could get a mental picture of the words. She started with the word “doll”. She would let Helen play with the doll, and then spell the letters “D-O-L-L” on her hand. When they initially did this, Helen thought it was a game. She wrote about her excitement later in her book, The Story of My Life:
译文:安妮教海伦学习语言的方法简单明了。她先在海伦手上拼写单词,使海伦联想到单词的画面。安妮给海伦拼写的第一个词是“doll”。她先让海伦和洋娃娃玩耍,然后在海伦的手上拼写“D-O-L-L”。刚开始海伦以为这是在玩游戏。后来在《我的人生故事》一书中,海伦描述了自己的兴奋之情:
第4段原文:“Running downstairs to my mother, I held up my hand and made the letters for ‘doll’. I did not know that I was spelling a word or even that words existed; I was simply making my fingers go in monkey-like imitation.”
译文:“我跑下楼去见我母亲,举起手来,也给她拼写字母组成‘doll’。可我那时并不知道自己在拼写单词,甚至压根不知道词汇的存在。我仅仅是亦步亦趋地用手指模仿老师。”
第5段原文:When they were at the well one day, Anne put one of Helen’s hands under the stream of water. As the water flowed over Helen’s hand, Anne spelt out “W-A-T-E-R” into Helen’s other hand. As Anne wrote on Helen’s hand, Helen suddenly realised that the movement of the fingers meant the cool liquid flowing over her hand. This precious knowledge gave her hope and joy. Finally, she got the world of words opened up to her.
译文:一天,她们在井边,安妮把海伦的一只手放在水流下。水缓缓流过海伦的手掌,安妮在她的另一只手上拼写“W-A-T-E-R”。安妮在海伦手上写的时候,海伦突然意识到,手指的动作代表的是流过自己手掌的清凉的液体。这宝贵的知识给她带来希望和快乐。终于,她打开了语言世界的大门。
第6段原文:Now that Helen grasped the key to language, she was very eager to learn more and use it as much as she could. Children who can see and hear learn language easily, but for Helen, it was a gradual and sometimes painful process. However, because Helen was so enthusiastic about learning, the results were amazing.
译文:由于海伦理解了语言的关键,她非常渴望学习更多语言,并且尽可能运用它。正常的孩子能听、能看,学起语言来很容易。但对海伦来说,学习语言是个渐进的过程,有时会很痛苦。然而,因为海伦对学习极高的热情,学习成果令人吃惊。
第7段原文:As Helen’s knowledge and vocabulary expanded, she asked more and more questions. This soon led her to discover more complex words and changed her thinking process. Trying to learn the word “love” was an experience that she remembered well. This is how she described it in her book:
译文:随着海伦知识和词汇量的不断扩大,她提出的问题也越来越多。这使她学会了更复杂的单词,从而改变了思维的过程。她很清楚地记得,学习“love”这个单词的难忘经历。在书中她这样描述道:
第8段原文:“I remember the morning that I first asked the meaning of the word ‘love’. This was before I knew many words. I had found a few early violets in the garden and brought them to my teacher ... Miss Sullivan put her arm gently round me and wrote on my hand, ‘I love Helen.’ ‘What is love?’ I asked. She drew me closer to her and said, ‘It is here,’ pointing to my heart ... Her words puzzled me very much because I did not then understand anything unless I touched it.”
译文:“我记得有一天早上,我第一次问‘love’这个词的含义。那时我的词汇量还很有限。我在花园里发现了早开的紫罗兰,摘下一些带给老师……莎莉文老师温柔地搂着我,在我的手上写着:‘我爱海伦。’‘什么是爱?’我问道。她把我拉到身边,指着我的心脏说,‘爱在这里。’……她的话令我非常困惑,因为以往我只有触碰到实际物体,才能理解它的意思。”
第9段原文:Although the meaning of love was still not apparent to Helen, she kept on trying to understand it. “I smelt the violets in her hand and asked, half in words, half in signs, a question which meant, ‘Is love the sweetness of flowers?’ ‘No,’ said my teacher.’
译文:尽管对海伦来说,爱的意义还不明确,但她一直试着理解。“我闻了闻她手里的紫罗兰,半拼写半比划地问了个问题,意思大概是‘爱是花朵的香味吗?’‘不,’我的老师回答道。”
第10段原文:When Helen and Anne were outside one day, Helen felt the warmth of the sun’s rays. She pointed up and asked if that was love. When her teacher said that it wasn’t, she was confused and disappointed. “I thought it strange that my teacher could not show me love.”
译文:一天和老师在室外,海伦感受到了阳光的温暖。她指了指太阳,问老师那是不是爱,老师说不是,海伦感到更困惑了,而且有些失望。“我觉得很奇怪,因为我的老师不能给我表示什么是爱。”
第11段原文:The word “think” was also a difficult one for Helen because it is such an abstract concept. However, one day as she was working on a simple task, she had a breakthrough. She was making necklaces with the help of Anne when she noticed that she had made some mistakes. Because she was uncertain how to fix them, she stopped to think carefully. As she did this, Anne touched Helen’s forehead and wrote the word “think” on her hand. “In a flash I knew that the word was the name of the process that was going on in my head.”
译文:“think”这个词对海伦来说也很难理解,因为它很抽象。然而有一天,在做一项简单的任务时,她取得了突破。她正在安妮的帮助下做项链,这时她发现自己犯了一些错。海伦不确定该如何解决,便停下来认真思考。在她思考的时候,安妮点了点海伦的额头,在她的手上写“think”这个词。“瞬间我就明白了,我头脑中进行的活动就是这个词的意思。”
第12段原文:It was the first time Helen had understood such a complex word—a word for something she couldn’t touch. At that moment, her mind returned to the word “love”. As she thought about its meaning again, the sun came out. She pointed to the sun and asked her teacher again if that was love. Anne answered Helen by explaining that love was like the sun and clouds in a way.
译文:那是海伦第一次明白复杂词语的意思,她触摸不到的抽象词语。这时,海伦又想起了“love”。她再次思考“love”是什么意思,恰巧这时太阳出来了。海伦指着太阳又问老师那是不是爱。安妮解释道,爱在某种程度上就像太阳和云彩。
第13段原文:“You cannot touch the clouds, you know; but you feel the rain... You cannot touch love either; but you feel the sweetness that it pours into everything. Without love you would not be happy or want to play.”
译文:“你知道吗,你摸不到云彩,但是你能感觉到雨……你也触摸不到爱,但是你能感觉到爱给万物带来的甜蜜。没有爱,你就不会快乐,也不会想玩耍。”
第14段原文:In that vivid moment, Helen finally understood the beautiful truth of the word “love”.
译文:就在那个动人的时刻,海伦终于明白了“love”这个词语蕴含的美丽的真谛。

五、长难句拆解
【原句】By the time she was seven years old, she still couldn’t speak, read or write and needed to have everything done for her.
【主干】she couldn’t speak, read or write and needed to have everything done.
【分层】By the time 引导时间状语从句;三个并列动词原形共用 couldn’t;have everything done 是 have + 宾语 + 过去分词,表示“让别人把事情做完”。
【翻译】到七岁时,她仍然不会说、不会读、不会写,一切都要别人替她做。
【考点】by the time + 过去时;have sth done(被动/请人做)与 have sb do、have sb doing 三者辨析。
【原句】With these severe restrictions to her communication, Helen’s behaviour was often unbearable.
【主干】Helen’s behaviour was unbearable.
【分层】With + 名词短语作原因 / 伴随状语;to her communication 介词短语作后置定语修饰 restrictions。
【翻译】由于交流受到这些严重限制,海伦的行为常常让人难以忍受。
【考点】with 复合结构(此处是 with + n. + 介词短语);注意与 with + n. + doing / done 同族。
【原句】Helen’s parents got a superb teacher recommended to them, a woman named Anne Sullivan.
【主干】Helen’s parents got a teacher recommended to them.
【分层】got + 宾语 + 过去分词(recommended),表示“使某事被做 / 经人推荐得到”;a woman named Anne Sullivan 是同位语,补充说明 a superb teacher;named 过去分词作后置定语。
【翻译】海伦的父母经人推荐,请到了一位出色的老师——一位名叫安妮·莎莉文的女士。
【考点】get sth done;同位语 + 过去分词作定语。这句与上句 have sth done 是对照考点。
【原句】Anne spelt words by writing on Helen’s hand so that Helen could get a mental picture of the words.
【主干】Anne spelt words.
【分层】by + 动名词作方式状语;so that 引导目的状语从句,从句含情态动词 could。
【翻译】安妮通过在海伦手心写字来拼写单词,好让海伦在脑海里形成这些词的图像。
【考点】by doing 表方式;so that 目的状从(与 so...that 结果状从区分)。
【原句】As the water flowed over Helen’s hand, Anne spelt out “W-A-T-E-R” into Helen’s other hand. As Anne wrote on Helen’s hand, Helen suddenly realised that the movement of the fingers meant the cool liquid flowing over her hand.
【主干】Anne spelt out “W-A-T-E-R”. / Helen suddenly realised that...
【分层】两个 As 都引导时间状语从句,表“当……的同时”;that 引导宾语从句;flowing over her hand 现在分词作后置定语修饰 the cool liquid。
【翻译】水流过海伦一只手时,安妮在她另一只手上拼出 W-A-T-E-R;就在安妮书写的那一刻,海伦突然明白:手指的动作代表的正是流过掌心的清凉液体。
【考点】as 引导时间状从(同时性);realise + that 宾从;现在分词作后置定语。这是全文的转折点,两个 as 营造出“同一瞬间”的仪式感。
【原句】Now that Helen grasped the key to language, she was very eager to learn more and use it as much as she could.
【主干】she was eager to learn more and use it.
【分层】Now that 引导原因状语从句(既然 / 由于);to learn 与 (to) use 并列不定式,第二个 to 省略;as much as she could 程度状语从句。
【翻译】既然掌握了语言的钥匙,她就急切地想多学、并尽可能多地使用它。
【考点】now that 原因状从;as + adj/adv + as sb can/could;并列不定式省略 to。
【原句】Trying to learn the word “love” was an experience that she remembered well. This is how she described it in her book.
【主干】Trying to learn the word “love” was an experience.
【分层】动名词短语作主语,谓语用单数 was;that 引导定语从句修饰 experience;how 引导表语从句。
【翻译】学“love”这个词的经历,她记得格外清楚。她在书里是这样描述的。
【考点】动名词作主语 + 单数谓语;that 定从;how 引导表语从句(对比 This is why / This is because)。
【原句】Her words puzzled me very much because I did not then understand anything unless I touched it.
【主干】Her words puzzled me.
【分层】because 引导原因状从;unless 引导条件状从(= if...not);puzzle 作动词“使困惑”。
【翻译】她的话让我非常困惑,因为那时除非亲手摸到一样东西,否则我什么也理解不了。
【考点】unless 条件状从;puzzle / puzzled / puzzling 词族;否定词 + anything 的搭配。
【原句】Because she was uncertain how to fix them, she stopped to think carefully.
【主干】she stopped to think carefully.
【分层】Because 原因状从;how to fix them 是“疑问词 + 不定式”结构,作 uncertain 的宾语;stop to do 表示“停下来去做另一件事”。
【翻译】因为拿不准该怎么把项链修好,她停下来认真想了想。
【考点】疑问词 + to do(= 宾语从句的简化);stop to do 与 stop doing 的辨析,本文出现两次(stopped to think / kept on trying),宜对照记。
【原句】It was the first time Helen had understood such a complex word—a word for something she couldn’t touch.
【主干】It was the first time (that) Helen had understood such a complex word.
【分层】It was the first time + that 从句,从句固定用过去完成时;破折号后是同位语,a word for something 后接省略关系代词的定语从句 she couldn’t touch。
【翻译】那是海伦第一次真正理解如此复杂、指向触摸不到之物的词。
【考点】It is/was the first time + 现在完成时 / 过去完成时(高考高频);省略关系代词的定从。
【原句】You cannot touch the clouds, you know; but you feel the rain... You cannot touch love either; but you feel the sweetness that it pours into everything. Without love you would not be happy or want to play.
【主干】You cannot touch..., but you feel... / Without love you would not be happy.
【分层】分号连接对照并列句;that 引导定语从句修饰 sweetness,it 指 love;Without love 是含蓄条件(= If there were no love),主句用 would + 动词原形,属虚拟语气。
【翻译】你摸不到云,可你能感到雨;你也摸不到爱,却能感到它洒向万物的甜美。没有爱,你不会快乐,也不会想玩耍。
【考点】含蓄条件句 + 虚拟语气(without / but for + 名词,主句 would do);that 定从;类比说理的排比结构。
六、语法点清单(从句、非谓语与虚拟语气)
状语从句:By the time...、When they initially did this...、As the water flowed...(时间)、Now that...、because...(原因)、so that...(目的)、unless...、Although...(让步)、if...(条件)。本篇几乎集齐了全部状语从句类型,是最适合做专项复习的一课。
宾语从句 / 表语从句:This was because...;realised that...;I did not know that... or even that...(并列宾从);This is how she described it;was uncertain how to fix them(疑问词 + 不定式)。
定语从句:Children who can see and hear...;an experience that she remembered well;the word “love” / a question which meant...;the process that was going on in my head;the sweetness that it pours...;省略关系词的 something she couldn’t touch。
非谓语:Trying to learn...(动名词作主语);by writing / by explaining(介词 + 动名词);named Anne Sullivan(过去分词作定语);flowing over her hand(现在分词作后置定语);pointing to my heart(现在分词作伴随状语);half in words, half in signs。
have / get + 宾语 + 过去分词:needed to have everything done for her;got a superb teacher recommended to them。两个结构在同一课里对照出现,是命题人最爱设的空。
虚拟语气:Without love you would not be happy or want to play(含蓄条件)。
固定句型:It was the first time sb had done sth;It is / was + 被强调... 类结构;so...that 与 so that 的区分。
海伦起初只当是游戏,能 monkey-like imitation 地比划字母,却 did not know that words existed。这一阶段是“模仿而未理解”:形式有了,意义还没接通。
↓
第一次突破(第5段):井边,一手接水流、一手被拼 W-A-T-E-R;两个 as 把动作锁在同一瞬间,Helen suddenly realised 手指动作与清凉液体之间的对应。符号与实物接通,gave her hope and joy,语言世界打开。全文的题眼 Enlightening a Mind 就在这一刻。
↓
扩张(第6–7段):Now that 领起:eager to learn more;过程 gradual and sometimes painful,但因 enthusiastic 而 results were amazing。随后 knowledge and vocabulary expanded → 问题越来越多 → 触及 more complex words → 改变 thinking process。
It was the first time... 明确标记这是第一个被理解的抽象词。思维有了名字,才可能理解爱。
↓
类比与顿悟(第12–14段):太阳出来,重问 love;安妮不再给定义,改用类比——云摸不到,但能感到雨;爱也摸不到,但能感到它洒向万物的甜美;再用 Without love you would not be happy 的虚拟句点出作用。In that vivid moment,海伦终于懂了。全文结构是“缺失 → 方法 → 形式模仿 → 意义接通 → 抽象受阻 → 借道突破 → 类比顿悟”,每一步都由前一步的问题推出,是典型的“认知成长型”叙事,也是读后续写里写“学会 / 明白”的最佳范本。
八、写作迁移(仿写与输出)
模板一:By the time..., sb still couldn’t...(困境开篇)
课文句:By the time she was seven years old, she still couldn’t speak, read or write.
仿写:By the time the term ended, I still couldn’t work out the last problem in the paper.(学期结束时,我还是解不出卷子上最后那道题。)——用于交代起点、制造成长空间。
模板二:Now that..., sb was eager to...(转折推进)
课文句:Now that Helen grasped the key to language, she was very eager to learn more.
仿写:Now that I had found the right method, I was eager to try it on every exercise.(既然找到了正确方法,我就急着把它用到每一道题上。)——读后续写里写“转机之后的行为”。
模板三:It was the first time sb had done...(标记突破)
课文句:It was the first time Helen had understood such a complex word.
仿写:It was the first time I had finished a speech without a single note in my hand.(那是我第一次手上一个字都不看就讲完了整篇。)——成长类叙事的高分句,注意从句用过去完成时。
模板四:You cannot touch..., but you feel...(类比说理)
课文句:You cannot touch the clouds, you know; but you feel the rain... You cannot touch love either; but you feel the sweetness that it pours into everything.
仿写:You cannot measure kindness, but you feel the warmth it leaves behind long after the moment has passed.(善意无法丈量,可事过很久你仍能感到它留下的温度。)——用于抽象主题(爱、友谊、坚持)的结尾升华,比直接下定义更有感染力。
模板五:Without..., sb would not...(含蓄条件虚拟)
课文句:Without love you would not be happy or want to play.
仿写:Without those quiet hours of practice, she would never have stood on that stage.(若没有那些安静的练习时光,她绝不会站上那个舞台。)——议论文、读后续写结尾点题,注意主句 would (have) done 的形式。
